Cuse Cheap Spotlight Special: Maxwells

Welcome to the second edition of Cuse Cheap Spotlight Special. This week we put the spotlight on Maxwells, which is located at 122 East Genesee Street downtown in Hanover Square and their phone number is (315) 299-6633 if you're looking to call for reservations. You can find their website here, their Facebook page here, their Twitter page here and their Instagram page here.

So why Maxwells? As we mentioned in our debut spotlight, we are looking for places with great deals and great upcoming events worth posting and as it seems, Maxwells has a few events and specials worth sharing at this time. It is also a great local spot for a nice indoor dinner or patio seating on those nice days when you want to sit downtown and watch the world go by.

Let's start with tonight (this blog post was posted on February 28th) as Syracuse favorite Jess Novak will perform live from 7-9 PM before going on tour until the end of March. And starting at 9, it is Mardi Gras Open Mic Night and admission is free for both events.

On Thursday nights, you can stop in at 7-9 PM for Trivia Night. Not only will you find $7 select beer pitchers and $2 off wings but prizes for all including last place.

As you can see above, Dining Week has been extended until Saturday March 4th. This means you can call now (or stop in) and reserve a seat for a 3 course meal for only $25. And if you are curious, take a look at this delicious menu below to plan out your meal ahead of time.

Do you search for Happy Hour specials after a long day at work? Maxwells has Happy Hour specials 4-7 PM every Monday-Saturday with $2 off craft beer pints, $3 well drinks and $4 house wine plus $5 bite specials.

On March 8th, you can enjoy these specials as well as complimentary chef inspired appetizers from 4-7 PM for their Chef's Happy Hour.

Looking for a night of music and painting? On March 22nd, join Painting In The Air artist Kara Cook and musician Billy Harrison for a fun night painting your choice of a beer stein or wine glass with a March Madness theme for only $25 (or get 2 glasses for $35). Tickets are available either by texting 315-415-0659 or stop in to Music In The Air Studios Mondays, Tuesdays. and Thursdays 3-8 PM (710 S. Main Street in North Syracuse).

How about their St. Patty's live music night with Buddish on March 18th starting at 10 PM with no cover charge? Brick oven pizzas starting at $9? Or if you are a college student with a valid ID, did you know you can save 15% off your food purchase so long as it is not in conjunction with any other deal?

Downtown Syracuse contains so many great food and drink establishments that deserve all the attention they get and this list should include Maxwells. I will admit that we here at Cuse Cheap may be slightly biased (though we will gladly spotlight any local business with great deals and events without prejudice) as when we first started this venture, Maxwells was one of the first and friendliest places to interact with us but shouldn't that be something that also deserves recognition? They saw we were trying to make a positive difference in Syracuse and CNY and were supportive not only of us but ensuring that people see the positives in our city and our people including other local businesses. We have visited Maxwell's and the food (don't get me started on how good the chicken parm was), the hospitality and the experience in general made us fans even more than before we walked in the door.

We hope you will check it out for yourself and see why you can find great deals, great events and why you should Eat, Drink and Chill at Maxwell's in Hanover Square.

The Out Of Towners Guide To Exploring Cuse Cheap

Recently I was approached to put together a list of places for out of town visitors by a co-owner of ER Lacrosse for their upcoming Upstate LAX Jam tournament and after thinking about it, I liked this idea as I know CNY does host sports tournaments, school events, college visits and other festivities locally. In fact I liked it so much I thought I should put together a blog post to help them and others.

Obviously we here at Cuse Cheap know Central New York is a big place and a lot likely depends on what area you are located within the area. That said, we wanted to make a list of a few affordable options for the families to eat and local attractions for the family (and a couple night life/bar destinations for the adult crowd) during down time.

Tully's Good Times-

Website Twitter Facebook

Why Tully's?

Tully's is a sports bar but has fun for the whole family including video games and air hockey tables at some locations. They also have locations in North Syracuse, Dewitt, Liverpool and Fairmount, as well as other cities in Upstate NY. Tully's also offers an affordable kid's menu and lunch, happy hour and late night specials including their famous Tully's Tenders.

The Distillery-

Website Twitter Facebook

Why The Distillery?

The Distillery has one location in Syracuse at 3112 Erie Blvd East and was recently voted Judge's Choice for Best Sports Bar in Upstate NY by NYup.com. With outdoor seating as well for those nice days in Syracuse, they also have multiple TV's throughout the place including some at the booths. They also offer dinner specials all week, game and happy hour specials, wing specials on Sundays and on weekends, you can get a kid's scramble free with the price of an adult brunch menu entree purchase.

Zebbs Deluxe Grill & Bar-

Website

Why Zebb's?

Zebb's is another New York based chain with one location in the Syracuse area at 2803 Brewerton Road in Mattydale. Zebb's is well known for their burgers and the burger bar where you order the burger and then go put the toppings on it that you want. Zebb's mostly makes this list because on Sunday's they also offer free kid's meals for children under 10 with each purchase of an adult meal. Also if you like quality milkshakes, you should try that as well.

Papa Gallo's Mexican Restaurant-

Website Facebook

Why Papa Gallo?

Papa Gallo's is a local based Mexican Restaurant that you can find at 205 W. Genesee Street in Fayetteville. They're affordable and offer free kid's meals Sundays and Mondays for lunch and dinner (though some restrictions may apply). They have daily specials as well as happy hour specials every day 4-6:30 PM. They also advertise happy hour specials during SU games at the bar area and 10% discounts on your entire bill before and after games for those with tickets to the game.

Uncle Chubby's Pizza-

Website Facebook

Why Uncle Chubby's?

Uncle Chubby's is not just a pizza place but also has reasonably priced burgers, spiedies, wings, subs and dinners as well. You can find them at 615 Wolf Street in Syracuse. Mondays and Tuesdays they offer a large cheese pizza takeout special for only $7.95. You can also find a list of some of their other specials on their website here.

Cooper's Landing-

Facebook

Why Cooper's Landing?

Like affordable food or looking for a local place to watch the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup races? Check out Cooper's Landing at 7459 W. Murray Street (off Lakeshore Road) in Cicero. You can enjoy burgers, wings or haddock dinners on Friday and found out why they call themselves The Home of the 100 Ounce Draft Tower. In town on Wednesday's, you can also partake in their Cans and Clams deal or as I mentioned before, enjoy some beer specials for the NASCAR race (pictured below).

Original Grain-

The Market Diner-

The admission is only a $5 donation per person and children 10 and under are free (half price admission and 10% off in the gift shop for AAA members) and active duty military families also get free admission.

Erie Canal Museum-

Website Facebook Twitter

Why Erie Canal Museum?

If you enjoy history, you should check out the Erie Canal Museum. Located at 318 Erie Boulevard East, this museum is open Mon-Sat 10 AM-5 PM and Sunday 10 AM- 3 PM. Admission to the museum is donation only and a $5 donation is greatly appreciated. The museum not only explores the history of the Erie Canal but often times hosts interesting events as well.

MOST Syracuse-

Website Facebook Twitter

Why MOST Syracuse?

The MOST Syracuse is a fun, interactive museum for the entire family located in downtown Syracuse at 500 S. Franklin Street (in the Armory Square district). Single ticket admission prices are $12 for adults and $10 for kids 2-11 and seniors 65 and older for exhibits, another $2 for the planetarium features and $10-$8 for IMAX movies. With a proper ID, NY state teachers and active duty military and veterans can see exhibits for free. Also, every first Saturday and Sunday of each month, those with a Bank of America card will get free admission.

Downtown Nightlife-

For those who are looking for a very nice dinner or an adult night life or just take in the view of downtown Syracuse, the city is broken down into several districts. Two of the most popular for bars or restaurants are Armory Square and Hanover Square which have plenty of options from sports bars to beer pubs to casual and fine dining as well as tasty sweets and local coffee shops. The list is far too many to name here and just depends on your tastes. My advice: do as I do and put on some comfortable shoes and walk around to view them all or check out our page and social media sites (listed at the end of the post) for more specific deals and events as they occur.

Another area worth looking into is Clinton Square. Most weekends during the summer/fall season, you will find there are festivals held there frequently. And in winter you're visiting during the winter months, you can enjoy a fun time with the kids or romantic evening with a loved one ice skating when the water fountain is transformed into a skating rink (at a very affordable price).

Local 315 Brewing-

Website Facebook Twitter

Why Local 315 Brewing?

Locally brewed beer is becoming more and more frequent in many areas and Syracuse/Central New York is one such area. We are lucky to have several local options and one of them is Local 315 Brewing. You can find them in Warners, NY at 3160 Warners Road. They have happy hour specials Wednesday and Thursday (4-6 PM) and Fridays (3-5 PM) and get beer pints for only $4! You can also find some local music on hand from time to time so check out their website and social media for more details on that as well as the beers currently on tap.

Wegman's Playground & Good Dog Park-

Playground Website Dog Park Website

Why these parks?

How about a local park to just hang out in for some fun for you, the kids or even your dog family member? Well here are two options to pass the time. The dog park is great for those with dogs who love playing with other dogs but maybe not the best option for young kids since most activities are centered on the pets. If you have the kids and need to let them unleash all that energy, the playground is a great option and includes options for kids who may have certain disabilities and do not want to be left out. Please check out the website for hours, guidelines and more details before planning a visit.

AMF Strike 'N Spare Lanes-

Website Facebook

Why AMF Strike 'N Spare Lanes?

I am sure most areas contain multiple bowling alleys and Central New York is no exception. One such bowling alley you may enjoy is the AMF Strike 'N Spare Lanes at 1777 Brewerton Road in Mattydale and open 7 days a week. They feature 72 lanes, free wifi and an arcade as well as some great specials throughout the week. You can also join leagues, visit their sports bar or pro shop or arrange a party here.

If you are interested, the specials include:
-The After Party Fridays (after 10 pm, you can bowl unlimited games for only $10.89 though shoes not included).
-Monday Mayhem which is similar to the After Party Fridays but starts at 8 PM and also features pizza deals and drinks specials for adults 21 and over.
-$2 Tuesdays where games, shoes, pizza slices and PBR beer are only $2 a piece after 8 PM.
-College Night Thursdays which, with a valid college ID card will get you $7 unlimited bowling (shoes included this time), $2 PBR and $10 pizzas from 9 PM to close.

Cuse Cheap Spotlight Special: Cooper's Landing

Welcome to a new concept we are launching, possibly weekly, called the Cuse Cheap Spotlight Special. The goal will be to spotlight a local business offering really good specials and/or special events worth noting that are worth more than just a Facebook or Twitter share but may not get mainstream media attention. And while doing so, I can hopefully provide more information about the businesses that maybe some are not aware of but help make up our great community.

This week's Spotlight Special is Cooper's Landing. For those who have never been, Cooper's Landing is bar and grill located at 7459 W. Murray Drive (off Lakeshore Road) in Cicero. And as you can see in the photo above, there is dock access as its located on Oneida Lake and a nice deck overlooking the lake. So if you happen to be out on the lake or near Cicero and looking for some wings, a burger and a drink (or a nice haddock dinner on Friday's) and curious to find out why they call themselves the home of the 100 oz. Draft, this may become a local spot you want to check out. You can also find them on Facebook here.

There are several reasons I chose to start this feature off with the spotlight on Cooper's Landing. Not only because of the specials that I will list below but they were the first business to reach out to offer an exclusive one day deal for Cuse Cheap followers this past Friday. They messaged me and offered customers $1 off their meals just for mentioning our site. In exchange for this favor and because of their deals and good things I have heard about this business, I felt they deserved the spotlight.

And now the deals and upcoming calendar of events!!!

- Are you a CNY NASCAR fan looking for a place to watch the races? As you may know, Daytona qualifying has begun and on the 26th is the Daytona 500 and Cooper's Landing has got you covered for any NASCAR Cup with the specials pictured below:

- Or how about if you are looking for some fun and green beer on March 17th? You can join them for their St. Pat's Bash 2017 starting at noon until 11 PM. Put on some green and enjoy their green beer, food and giveaways, along with the Irish Captain Ladies, Miller Lite and others being a part of the party.

- On March 21st from 6-9 PM, Cooper's Landing will hold a Helping Four Leg Friends event to collect items and raise money to benefit the Humane Society on Taft Road. Syracuse Crunch players will be guest bartenders to help raise money that night. You can also donate items like cat litter, food, blankets, toys, etc daily leading up to the event as there will be a box inside the door for all the items. Those of us with pets know these furry family members can be great additions to any family and facilities like the Humane Society can use our help until their pets can find a loving home.

- Also back by popular demand, Wednesdays you can enjoy their Cans & Clams special. Clams are $5 a dozen (2 dozen limit per order) with specials on little necks and 16 oz Tallboys.

So stop in today and support this local business who has been kind enough to support this site and be sure to like their Facebook page, which you can find here. Cooper's Landing in Cicero is just another reason to love supporting our community and local businesses making the Syracuse area and Central New York such a great place to live.

Eats, Retreats, Sweets & Other Treats For Your CNY Valentine's Day 2017

`

I know I haven't posted much lately but my hope is to change that soon. I have been busy on Twitter and Facebook posting or sharing deals when I see them but just neglected to do any posts here on the blog.

To kick off 2017 on the blog, I have compiled a list of over 20 deals that caught my attention for those looking for some way to celebrate Valentine's Day. I have read the great work by Katrina Tulloch on syracuse.com (link is here) as well as Margaret McCormick's on Syracuse New Times ( her column is here) and enjoyed it but since I had already planned to do this, I am adding deals I did not see there or places I think sound fun. Not every deal will be cheap but sharing them because sometimes a good evening isn't always cheap but worth sharing regardless.

Here is my list broken down into four categories (Eats, Retreats, Sweets and Other Treats):
